Newspaper Recycling Ministry

Since 1982, the Focus Sunday School Class has operated a Newspaper Recycling Ministry at Maple Springs United Methodist Church. Over time, they’ve collected over 12 million pounds of paper and received $219,000+ from the sale of those newspapers!

The class works to keep the trailer and surrounding area (located in the Maple Springs parking lot) as neat as possible until the newspapers are picked up for transport. The newspapers are delivered to a company that purchases the paper and grinds it up for use in the manufacture of pads for packing furniture, fruit, and other products. The funds received from the sale of the paper have been donated to various church and community projects. As needs are made known the class members discuss and vote on where to contribute the funds.

Donations to community organizations include the American Red Cross, Crisis Control Ministries, Samaritan’s Purse, UMCOR, The Childrens Home of Winston-Salem, Old Town School, and many others. Past donations to Maple Springs Ministries include the Food Pantry, carpet installation and other maintenance projects, library gifts, mission trips, ministers’ emergency fund and many other projects. With your help, the class hopes to continue this recycling project and continue to contribute to the many charitable causes at the church and in the community!

To participate, please place your used newspaper in the trailers to help us in these efforts. For more information, contact Ed Hardman.
